Italian Business Register: how to check a company before you sell to it
By Arnold Koci · Last updated: 1 November 2026
The Italian Business Register (Registro Imprese) is the public record of every Italian company, kept by the Chambers of Commerce. Before you sell to or partner with an Italian firm, pull its visura camerale, read the filed accounts if it is a corporation, confirm the VAT number on VIES and find its certified email in INI-PEC. Twenty minutes of checks tell you size, who signs and whether it pays.
Most foreign sellers meet the Italian Business Register for the first time when a prospect asks for their own registration data, or when an invoice goes unpaid and a lawyer asks who the legal representative was on the day of the order. That is the wrong moment. The same register, read before the first meeting, answers the questions a seller needs most: is this company real, how big is it, who can sign, and does its balance sheet look like it pays at sixty days or never. This guide is written from the seller's seat, not the lawyer's. It is not legal advice.
What is the Italian Business Register and who keeps it?
The Registro Imprese is the official register of all businesses operating in Italy. It is kept by the local Chambers of Commerce and run as one national database by InfoCamere, the Chambers' IT company. A company that is not in the Register does not legally exist as a business, which makes it the single most reliable source on an Italian counterparty: more current than any purchased database and more complete than a website. You consult it through registroimprese.it, where single extracts can be bought online; an English language company registration report is also offered for foreign readers.
The Register covers every legal form, but it does not hold the same depth for each. Corporations (società di capitali: Srl, SpA, Sapa) must file annual accounts, so for them you see revenue and equity. Sole traders (ditte individuali) and partnerships (Snc, Sas) only appear with their registration data. In our Atlas of Italian companies, built on these records, 1,498,035 active corporations form the universe and 1,067,441 of them are mapped to a supply chain; 770,883 of those have a declared revenue figure on file. The rest exist, but you qualify them by other means.

What does a visura camerale actually contain?
A visura is a point in time extract about one company. The visura ordinaria shows the situation today; the visura storica adds every change since registration: previous names, former directors, capital increases, transfers of the registered office. For a seller the storica is worth the extra euros when a company looks young or has changed hands, because a fresh name on an old tax code tells a story the website will not.
| Field in the visura | What it tells a seller | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Denominazione and forma giuridica | Exact legal name to put on the quote and the contract, and whether accounts are filed (Srl and SpA yes, Snc and sole traders no). | Header of the visura; INI-PEC search also returns it. |
| Codice fiscale and Partita IVA | The eleven digit identifiers for invoicing and for the VIES check. For corporations they usually coincide. | Visura header; VIES confirms the VAT number is active. |
| Sede legale and unità locali | Registered office and operating sites: where the plant is, which region's sales rep should call, whether "Milan" is a mailbox. | Visura, section on offices; the Atlas shows regional concentration by sector. |
| Indirizzo PEC | The certified email with legal value, mandatory for all companies. Formal notices and signed contracts go here. | Visura; free lookup at INI-PEC. |
| Codice ATECO and attività prevalente | What the company declares it does. Your first filter for fit, and the language of every Italian market map. | Visura; explained in our ATECO guide. |
| Amministratori and poteri | Who can legally sign: sole director, board, managing director with specific powers. The person who said yes in the meeting may not be on this list. | Visura, section on company officers and powers. |
| Capitale sociale | Paid in capital. Small capital is normal for an Srl; a very low figure with high turnover is a question, not a verdict. | Visura header. |
| Stato attività and procedure | Active, in liquidation, insolvency procedures, or struck off. Non negotiable before you ship on credit. | Visura; the storica shows when the status changed. |
| Addetti and soci | Declared headcount and, for Srl, the shareholders. Tells you whether the owner and the director are the same person. | Visura (headcount from INPS data); shareholders in the Srl visura. |
Why should a seller read the filed accounts, not just the website?
Because in Italy the balance sheet is public and the website is marketing. Every società di capitali files its bilancio with the Register once a year, and the extract gives you revenue, equity, debt and usually employees, for the current year and the previous one. Three lines are enough for a first screen: revenue trend, equity sign and the ratio of short term debt to revenue. A company with falling revenue, thin equity and heavy short term bank debt will still welcome your quote. It will also pay you last.
The reason to look matters more here than elsewhere in Europe. In the 2025 Atradius barometer for Italy, 64% of B2B sales were made on credit, typical terms ran from 31 to 90 days, and more than half of invoices were paid late. When credit is the default, the accounts are your credit check. Our guide toB2B payment terms in Italy covers what to put in the contract once the check is done.

Two limits. Accounts are filed months after year end, so the latest file describes a company twelve to eighteen months ago. And micro companies may file an abbreviated bilancio with fewer lines. Since about 95% of Italian businesses have fewer than ten employees, you will meet the short form often: it still shows revenue and equity, which is what you need.

How do you check an Italian VAT number?
Go to the European Commission'sVIES VAT validation, pick IT and type the eleven digits without spaces. A valid answer confirms the Partita IVA is registered for intra EU transactions and, for Italian numbers, normally returns the registered name and address, which you then match against the visura. An invalid answer does not always mean fraud: some Italian companies that trade only domestically are not enrolled in the VIES archive and have to request it. In that case, ask the prospect for the visura or check the number through the Agenzia delle Entrate national service. Keep a dated screenshot of the result with the quote; if an invoice is later disputed, the check protects you on VAT as well.
Where do you find a company's certified email, and when do you use it?
Every Italian company must hold a PEC address, the certified email that has the legal value of a registered letter. It is printed in the visura and searchable for free in INI-PEC, the national index run by the Ministry and InfoCamere, by tax code or by company name and province. Use it for what it is: the channel for order confirmations, contract signatures, formal reminders and disputes. Do not use it for first contact. A cold message to a PEC mailbox lands with the administration, reads as a legal notice and has been sanctioned by the Italian privacy authority when sent as advertising. Business development speaks to the person who decides; PEC speaks to the company.
What can you not see, and how do you qualify those companies?
For sole traders and partnerships the Register gives registration data but no accounts, so revenue is invisible. For corporations that filed late or not at all you see the gap itself, which is already information. In both cases, qualify from the outside: declared headcount in the visura, the operating sites, the ATECO activity, the age of the company, the presence of a website (only 324,164 of the 1,067,441 mapped corporations have one on record) and, above all, the conversation. In Italy the owner decides and the owner will tell you about volumes and payment habits in the first meeting if asked plainly. The Register tells you whether to believe it.

How do you turn the visura into a qualification checklist?
Before quoting on credit to an Italian company, run these seven checks in order. Each one takes a minute once you know where to look.
- Existence and status. Active in the Register, no liquidation or insolvency procedure, name and tax code match the person you are talking to.
- Legal form. Srl or SpA means filed accounts and limited liability; a sole trader means personal liability and no accounts, which changes how much credit you extend.
- Size. Revenue band and headcount from the bilancio and the visura. Our market mapping uses the same bands, from under 500 thousand euros to over 50 million, so that the companies in a campaign actually match the deal size.
- Solvency signals. Revenue trend over two years, equity above zero, short term debt in proportion. Red flags lead to shorter terms or advance payment, not to a lost deal.
- Who signs. Legal representative and powers. If your champion is not on the list, plan a second meeting with the person who is.
- Where. Registered office versus operating sites, to route the right salesperson and the right language.
- Fit. ATECO code and declared activity against your target. A wholesaler and a manufacturer with the same product line are different buyers.
How does Clientium use the Business Register in market mapping?
We start every Italian market map from Register data, not from a bought list. First the filters: ATECO division, revenue band, employees, region. That gives the real number of companies that can buy what a client sells, the figure we present in the mapping session before anyone commits. Only then do we look for the decision maker in each company, which is why 777,411 of the corporations in our Atlas carry a mapped decision maker. The written qualification criteria for an appointment, including company size and the role of the person in the room, are public on ourcriteria page. For a foreign company this means the due diligence described here is done before the first email, on every company in the campaign, not after the first unpaid invoice. How that fits in a launch is on the page about how toenter the Italian market, and the size of each sector is on how many companies are in Italy. Who to speak to once the company checks out is the subject ofwho decides in an Italian company.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Italian Business Register?
The Registro Imprese is the official public register of all Italian companies, kept by the Chambers of Commerce and run technically by InfoCamere. Every business must be listed before it can trade. You consult it at registroimprese.it, in Italian or with an English company registration report.
What is a visura camerale?
A visura is an extract from the Business Register for one company: legal form, registered office, certified email, ATECO code, directors, share capital and status. The ordinaria shows today, the storica shows every change since registration. It is informational, not a legal certificate.
How do I check an Italian VAT number?
Use the European Commission VIES service: select IT and enter the eleven digit Partita IVA. A valid response confirms the number is active for intra EU trade and, for Italy, usually returns the registered name and address. The Agenzia delle Entrate also offers a national check.
Can I see the revenue of an Italian company?
For società di capitali (Srl, SpA, Sapa) yes: they must file annual accounts with the Register, and the bilancio shows revenue, equity and often employees. Sole traders and partnerships file no accounts, so for them you only see registration data.
What is a PEC address and why does it matter for a seller?
PEC is certified email with legal value, mandatory for every Italian company. It is listed in the visura and in the free INI-PEC index. It is the formal channel for contracts and disputes, not for first contact: cold outreach goes to the person, PEC goes to the company.
